Whippoorwill Bridge

The skirmish at Whippoorwill Bridge took place on Dec. 4th, 1861 and was the first conflict of the War in Logan County, Kentucky. Whippoorwill Bridge stood five miles west of Russellville. This is where present day 68/80 crosses Whippoorwill Creek.While the battle was considered small - about 90 Confederate soldiers of the 9th Kentucky Infantry (Formerly known as the fifth and later known as the Orphan Brigade) and ninety Union Soldiers engaged in the action which resulted in the first casualties of the war for that unit.
