Considering Reenacting?

Civil War Reenacting is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States, and with good reason.  Not only does it reinforce our sense of pride in our heritage, but it's something in which the entire family can participate. Reenactors have the privilege of "bringing history to life". Most children who participate in the hobby do better in school, because they are more engaged in the learning process.

If you are considering the hobby, you should start by attending Civil War Reenactments and observing what goes on.  Meet a few units. Ask questions. Reenactors love "new recruits"! If they do not want to answer your questions, chances are, they are not the unit for you.  The 5th Kentucky would be delighted to talk to you about the hobby and what to expect should you want to give it a try.  For your first event, we ask that you buy nothing. Come out, try on the gear, get a feel for the hobby, and give it a try.

If you fall in love with the hobby as we have, talk to us before you go out and buy gear.  We do not expect you to buy everything at once - that could get expensive! We also don't want you wasting money on the wrong things. There are a lot of businesses out there who love to take advantage of new Reenactors.  We will guide you on how to buy affordable and accurate gear. There are a lot of sutlers out there who sell "Farby" gear. "Farby" is a Civil War Reenactment term for anything not typical of the period.  A polyester uniform would be "farby" since they didn't have polyester in 1861-1865.  Wearing historically accurate clothing is essential to your "impression" and attention to detail is important.  We are here to help you in this.
